Bra Care 101 - Taking Care of Your “Girls” Best Friend
Do you wake up in the middle of the night wondering if you’re washing your bras correctly? Probably not, but it is something to consider. Washing your bras properly increases their lifespan and gives you a comfier fit. According to the bra “Goddesses,” your bra should last for about three years if you take care of it.
The best way to care for your bras is to handwash them. It takes a bit more time, but it helps keep the elasticity of your bra, reduces fabric and wire wear, and doesn’t stretch the straps. If you use a no-rinse soap it makes the job fast and easy.
But your lifestyle may not allow for handwashing, so the next best thing is machine washing on the gentle or delicate cycle. But don’t just toss them in with the rest of the wash, follow these 9 tips to keep your bras in comfy condition:
1. Wash your bra in cool water after wearing it 2-3 times.
Washing in hot water will weaken the elastic and shorten the bra’s life span. Handwash if you have time, or machine wash on delicate/gentle. The delicate/gentle cycle on your washing machine means it washes and spins slower, which is easier on your bra and causes less stress. A stress-free bra is what you’re going for.
2. Use mild detergent
Regular detergent is harder on the fabric and reduces your bra’s lifespan. Use a no-rinse soap, it makes the job fast and easy.
3. Shower Rinse
Take your bra into the shower with you and rinse it off. It gives you a couple more wears before you have to wash it.
4. Never put your bras in a dryer or iron them
The heat damages the fabric and underwire.
5. Never hang or fold your bras to store them. Stack them flat in a drawer or on a shelf
6. Avoid bleach. It damages the fabric and the underwire
7. Use a Laundry Bag
If you are machine washing your bra, use a laundry bag to avoid tangles and ruining any bling. Do up the clasps, so they don’t tear your bra as they flail around in the wash. If you don’t have a laundry bag, use a pillow case and tie the end.
Wash likes with likes. Even if you’re using a laundry bag or pillow case, the other clothes in the washing machine also have an effect on your bra’s life. Washing with jeans and heavy items puts more wear and tear on your bra as it’s bounced around the washing machine.
8. Wash Likes with Likes
Even if you’re using a laundry bag or pillow case, the other clothes in the washing machine also have an effect on your bra’s life. Washing with jeans and heavy items puts more wear and tear on your bra as it’s bounced around the washing machine.
9. Pat Dry with a Towel
Pat dry with a towel. Don’t twist them or hang them up by the strap. Twisting or squeezing will ruin the underwire and distort the shape of the cups. Hanging them up by the straps will stretch the elastic and over time it will distort the shape. If you’re hanging your bra to dry, hang it by the gore, the middle piece between the cups.
Follow these tips and your bras will last a lot longer. But its not limited to your bras. All your lingerie will benefit from this gentle care. Take care of all your delicates and they’ll help you look sexy longer.
